Scenarios for Syria’s post-war economic development will be discussed at the 4th Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF) on 19, 20 and 21 April 2018.
A Syrian delegation is expected to attend YIEF 2018 for the first time; it will consist of members of the government, MPs, experts, and representatives of the business community. The Forum’s programme will include a session on Syria’s post-conflict economic recovery and on developing bilateral Russia-Syria relations.
“We intend to discuss scenarios for Syria’s post-war recovery to be subsequently developed by the YIEF’s expert community. Russian and Syrian entrepreneurs will also meet on the Forum’s sidelines to discuss the prospects for joint projects”, Andrey Nazarov, co-chairman of the Organizing Committee of YIEF 2018 and co-chairman of the Delovaya Rossiya All Russia Public Organization, said in comments to Izvestiya.
Zuhair Kherbek, a, important Syrian businessman, told Izvestiya that he planned to attend YIEF 2018 and discuss potential avenues for cooperation with Russia. According to Mr. Kherbek, who works in agriculture, Syria currently needs both investment and trade with Russia.
“Trade should be conducted without intermediaries. Currently, neighbouring states are taking advantage of the situation in Syria. They buy our goods dirt-cheap and then re-sell them as their own, causing our entrepreneurs major losses”, Mr. Kherbek stressed.
