On Tuesday during a press-conference the governor of Sevastopol Dmitriy Ovsyannikov claimed that construction of a new runway of the airport "Belbek" should be completed before the end of 2018, according to the publication "Business Crimea".
"The opening period of the runway is at the end of the year," he said and added that the airport will uplift to 10 thousand passengers per year, as it is designed for a limited number of flights — charters and VIP – boards. The general contractor of construction is Federal state unitary enterprise "Main military construction department №7" of the Ministry of Defense of Russian Federation.
"Belbek" was built in 1941 as a military-oriented airfield. Initially, fighter aircraft was based there. This practice continued even after the affiliation of Crimea to the Russian Federation in March 2014. However in June military officers initiated the "Belbek" integration to the list of airfields of joint basing at the request of the city authorities. Within the framework of the Federal target program "Social and economic development of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol until 2020" more than 1.7 billion rubles were allocated for the development of "Belbek". These funds are expected to be used for the construction of the apron, the fuel filling complex and the purchase of air navigation equipment.
This year, the new Simferopol airport had begun operations, the opening took place on April 16th. Within the framework of the II Yalta International Economic Forum the investment agreement on the construction of a new airport complex in Simferopol was signed in April 2016.
